Synopsis This extensive catalogue features work by the American cartoonist Robert Crumb, creator of such legendary characters as Fritz the Cat and Mr. Natural, from the exhibition held at the Museum Ludwig, Cologne from 28 May to 12 September 2004. Focusing primarily on Crumb's drawings, the exhibition documents more than forty-years' work. Crumb's art, although rooted in American culture is critical of the American way of life. Influenced by Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Brueghel, William Hogarth and James Gillray, whose work he greatly admires, Crumb's metier is social satire. The brilliant, hard-hitting drawings and accompanying texts are both surprising and provocative. Witty, and to the point, he reflects 'all the deceit, bigotry and false snobbery of our uptight society.' (Andre Heller)
